Bilona Ghee/ Regular Ghee - What's the difference

Ghee has been part of Indian kitchens for centuries. It’s not just an ingredient, but also a part of our traditions, rituals, and health practices. But today, when you walk into a store or browse online, you’ll notice many options—Bilona Ghee, A2 Ghee, Regular Ghee, and more.

So, what exactly is Bilona Ghee, and how is it different from regular ghee? Let’s break it down.

1. The Method of Preparation

  • Bilona Ghee

    • Made using the traditional Vedic Bilona method.

    • Curd is prepared from A2 milk → churned with a wooden bilona (hand churner) → white butter is separated → slowly heated on a low flame to obtain ghee.

    • It’s a slow, time-consuming, and labor-intensive process but preserves nutrients and enhances the aroma.

  • Regular Ghee

    • Usually made from directly heating cream or malai.

    • Faster and easier for large-scale production.

    • Lacks the traditional fermentation and churning process, which means fewer probiotics and slightly different taste.

2. Nutritional Value

  • Bilona Ghee

    • Rich in A2 beta-casein protein (when made from A2 cow’s milk).

    • Contains more butyric acid (good for digestion), CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) (supports immunity & fat metabolism), and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).

    • Easier to digest, especially for lactose-sensitive individuals.

  • Regular Ghee

    • Still nutritious, but nutrient profile depends on milk source (often A1 or mixed milk).

    • May not have the same concentration of beneficial fatty acids and probiotics as Bilona ghee.

3. Taste & Aroma

  • Bilona Ghee

    • Distinct earthy aroma and slightly nutty taste.

    • Feels lighter on the stomach.

    • Traditionally considered satvik (pure) in Ayurveda.

  • Regular Ghee

    • Taste may vary, often slightly heavier.

    • Aroma is less pronounced because of industrial heating methods.

4. Health Benefits

  • Bilona Ghee

    • Boosts digestion and gut health.

    • Supports immunity and joint health.

    • Good for brain development and skin health.

    • Used in Ayurvedic therapies like Panchakarma.

  • Regular Ghee

    • Provides healthy fats and energy.

    • Still beneficial but not as potent as Bilona ghee in terms of Ayurvedic health properties.

5. Price Factor

  • Bilona Ghee

    • More expensive because of traditional, time-consuming production and limited quantity output.

  • Regular Ghee

    • Cheaper, mass-produced, and easily available.

✅ The Final Word

Both Bilona Ghee and regular ghee have their place in our kitchens. If you are looking for authentic taste, better nutrition, and Ayurveda-backed health benefits, Bilona Ghee is the superior choice. Regular ghee is fine for everyday cooking but lacks the depth and purity of Bilona.

At Swadeshi Gaon Wala, we make our ghee using the traditional Bilona method to ensure you experience purity, heritage, and wellness in every spoon. 🌿✨
